Deadline for Application: Friday, October 27, 2023

The Kikyoshiki / Confirmation Ceremony will be held at Higashi Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii (Higashi Hongwanji Betsuin) following Higashi Honganji Hawaii District and Higashi Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii HOONKO Service on Sunday, November 12.

Participation in a Kikyoshiki symbolizes one's confirmation of becoming a true follower of the Buddha by receiving his or her Homyo / Dharma name.

Although the opportunity to participate in Kikyoshiki is available nearly every day at our mother temple in Kyoto, the ceremony is only rarely held here in the United States. As a result, most people believe that a Homyo or Dharma name was something to be received after death at a funeral service. However, the "Kikyoshiki Ceremony" is to become a disciple of Buddha, and the Dharma name is a new name that indicates that you have been guided by the teachings of Nenbutsu and are now walking the path of the Buddha.

On this occasion of the District and Betsuin HONKÔ service, Overseas District Abbot Yul Otani will officiate the HOONKO Service and perform the Kikyoshiki Ceremony.

The fee as set by our Kyoto headquarters is $100.00 per person. Participants will receive a pamphlet explaining the meaning of the ceremony, a kataginu (layperson's sash), a Shoshin-ge CD, and a personal hand-written Dharma Name. For more information, please email the district office.

Gassho,
Kenjun Kawawata
Bishop, Higashi Honganji Hawaii District
